Maybe you'd need N different ones? > Actually, the precedent is out there - eons ago, there was a proliferation of different terminal types (circa late '70s) PC's did not exist, and ANSI did not have a standard for ascii terminals. Even then MIT had a large, diverse computing network. They were one of the founding Arpanet sites (what later became the internet we know and love). Among their computer assets were a couple of systems, MIT-MC (macsyma consortium) and MIT-AI (artificial intellegence), both of which ran on DECsystem-10's with home a grown operating system known as ITS. These systems were the birth place of may wonderful things, including TECO, and EMACS (and don't forget Zork!). Due to the large proliferation of terminal types, it was not easy for developers to write screen handlers that worked on everyone's system. CURSES did not exist for unix at this point. Rather than a screen handling library for this situation, the folks at MIT came up with something that could be considered a very unique solution. They developed the "CRTSTY" program (don't ask me what it stands for - I don't remember). It acted as a pseudo terminal handler between the application program and the user's terminal i/o. CRTSTY would translate all screen i/o from whatever the system standard was to what had the best chance of working on the end user's display. It also did an excellent job of minimizing screen i/o, which was excellent for those unfortunate enough to be logged in at something like 300 baud (1200 baud modems where just beginning to become affordable at the time). CRTSTY definately took a percentage of system resources to run, but the results were acceptable. People were able to use EMACS, or any other software, regardless of the actual hardware they were connected to. Some of the drivers I know they had working included VT52, ADM-3A, Soroc IQ-120, Mime, Hazeltine, all of which had unique display protocols. I doubt that there is anything left of the old CRTSTY software that would be of use to you here, but there are screen driven programs that manage pseudo terminals for Open-VMS available that may be of use to you. Check out the BOSS utility from ftp://ftp.wku.edu vms archives. This may be a good starting point. All you'll need to do is rewrite the display end of it, but I'm pretty sure that it does the interpretation of the incomming ansi sequences for you.
